Creating With Freedom: Why You Shouldn't Take It Too Seriously
As a designer, seamstress, and storyteller, I've come to realize that the best ideas often come when you're not trying so hard to be perfect. Somewhere along the way, we were taught that creating had to be polished, productive, and “worth something.” But truthfully? Creativity is at its most powerful when it’s free, messy, and straight from the heart.
Taking creativity too seriously can actually stifle it. When you’re constantly worrying about how something will be received, if it’ll sell, or if it looks “professional enough,” you start building invisible walls around your imagination. And before you know it, the thing that once brought you joy starts to feel like a chore.
Let me say this: not every idea has to go viral. Not every piece has to be for a client. And not every post needs to be perfectly curated. Sometimes, creating just to create is the win.
When you allow yourself to make something simply because it came to you—whether it's a sketch, a design, a reel, or a random concept—you tap into something more meaningful. You give your inner child a chance to play. You give your future self a library of raw, authentic work to build from.
So the next time you feel blocked or overwhelmed, step away from the pressure. Turn on your favorite playlist. Doodle. Sew without a plan. Write a blog post (like this one) straight from the gut. Trust that something good will come from it, even if it’s just the peace that comes with self-expression.
You are the vessel. Let the ideas flow through you.
And remember—this is your art. There’s no wrong way to do it when it’s coming from the heart.
